Launches

event management

Within my role as celebrant, I make launches with other people, for their projects and books.

Whether launching a book, building, art exhibition or other project, the moment of making it public signifies both the end and beginning of two momentous journeys. A launch is the hinge of the creation’s existence. It is the bridge between the private and public life of what has been made.

I have launched, if not a thousand, many many books – of fiction,
poetry and anthologies – print and electronic.

These events have taken place in art galleries, libraries, a maritime museum, a judges’ lodgings and village halls. Each subtly took on the personality of the book, and proved, rightly, to be celebratory
affairs, whether among a few friends and colleagues or public events open to whoever is curious.

I also launch buildings, homes and art exhibitions, ensuring that the
essence of the work is reflected in the nature of the occasion.

As with all my ceremony work I am keen to collaborate as much as possible to define, design and deliver exactly what fits to purpose.

Fees will vary depending on the nature of your event, beginning at £50.

Namings

dollYour child’s name will be the word they hear more regularly than any other. Its sound and rhythm will inform their identity.

The sound and rhythm of the naming ceremony will be present in the environment, rituals, words and music you choose for the occasion.

Welcoming this person into your life, and that of your family and community, can also include your hopes for them as well as for
yourselves, your knowledge of them, other people’s understanding of you, and vows you may wish to make. Whatever you choose to
focus on, we’ll create a loving event that truly reflects your feelings.

Weddings

secular wedding north west englandIf you’ve chosen to get married, to make public your commitment to each other, then you’ll want a ceremony to suit your personalities and reflect your union and aspirations for it. A secular wedding is limited only by your imagination. You can have it wherever you choose, with a visit to the registry office before or after
ceremony itself.

My role is to help you create your own customized ceremony – the setting, readings, music, poems, vows and any rituals – for this rite that is both intimate and public. My aim is to make it as
individual as you and your relationship.

If you are wanting a civil ceremony and would like to explore what is possible, then I’d be honoured to contribute to your event, and work with you with care and attention to every detail.

I am not a registrar and the ceremony I make won’t be legally binding, but works in conjunction with a registrar. It is ideal if you have a particular building or outdoor space in mind that isn’t registered for marriages.

I understand this ceremony has to be absolutely right for you and am happy to meet or talk over the phone for you get to a feel of my style before booking me. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions without any obligation to continue.

My guiding principle when working with others is to keep myself out of the frame. The work is what is important.

As a coach my aim to enable you to clarify exactly what it is you want and how you can best achieve it.

As a mentor or workshop facilitator my job is to help you write what you want – and in the best way to suit you.

As a producer of live literature events my focus is on creating
engaging, vibrant and inclusive occasions, introducing new writing and writers. I want to share and spread the imaginative reach of performed poetry and prose.

Testimonials

Ceremony
Sarah and I talked for a long while about the key persons in my life that the ceremony revolved around .  Through Sarah’s patient listening and wise questions we identified the main area to focus on. During the preparation of the ceremony I felt supported and respected as Sarah guided me through the process. I also benefited from Sarah’s  patient, caring and enthusiastic approach and felt full ownership of the final ceremony which marks an important transition in my life
Thank you very much!
Hanneke

Whenever Sarah is involved in a project, I breathe a sigh of relief. Partly this is because she’s reliable, organised, and brings cheery professionalism to her work. More, though, it is because her attention to detail encompasses the finer points of any production and what each individual involved hopes to achieve. That she is able to steer a straight course away from the dodgier suggestions is another reason that I grab the chance to work with her whenever I can. Rebecca

I would trust Sarah to hold any space, be it joyful or sombre, to ensure the occasion was respectful and relaxed. Diana

Sarah’s background as a performance poet shows in her keen sense of timing and delivery, engaging her audience creatively and according to the requirements of material and events.  Whether reciting her own work or that of others, Sarah’s clarity and expression give due recognition to the significance of words… Sarah has an eye for detail, sets high standards, has a feel for the uniqueness of celebratory occasions and also has a sense of fun.  Sarah’s creative flair is also evident in her awareness of the importance of space, colour and layout to both a room and printed materials in contributing to the feel of an event.  I feel this combination of factors, as well as her many other skills and talents, would enable her to provide a memorable ceremony tailored to and expressive of the desires and needs of the individuals involved.  Sandra

Tailormade Poems
Thank you so much for your work, it makes a very special gift. Catherine

Thanks for the poem – it is so lovely – exactly what I wanted without knowing what I wanted! Jenn

I am very honoured that you have written this wonderful poem for me. Thank you again: it was a beautiful tribute. Mary

The service you’re supplying with Tailormade is unique. It’s a really imaginative thing and incredibly good value when you consider what it is you’re doing. I think it’s a privilege to have access to poets like that, and to ask you to write a poem. Paul

You have done what I asked, captured and celebrated the energy and spirit of my aunt in a great ‘yes’ poem and it moved me to tears. Thanks for using your magic to stitch together memories and moments of my aunt. Sandie

I was delighted by the poem you wrote for my final Munro… It was a complete surprise, and a very original and imaginative idea … the poem relates a lot to me and my tastes and foibles: food, drink, music, habits and even an oblique reference to my mathematical background . And you incorporated these references into metaphors for my progress in the long quest over all those hills. I very much like the result, in particular the way you use the devices of language in an unsentimental way, so that they (metaphors etc.) work more on the parallels of ideas and thence reach their effect. I suppose this accords with my character – and you haven’t even met me! Tim

I was really bowled over by my poem. It is so personal and the details of my life so simply and beautifully expressed. Joan

We can’t thank you enough for the lovely card and absolutely beautiful poem. We have shown this off to everyone and will be getting it framed. We really will treasure it forever, so thank you for an incredibly special and personal gift. Katy

Ceremony

civil ceremony north west england

We all have stories, and stories within stories, that frame our relationships, rites of passage, environments and events. These can
be explored and shared in a ceremony that expresses your own
sensibility, experience and hopes.

A civil ceremony has the freedom to take place anywhere that best reflects your intent. The formality or informality, size and details of
your ceremony are determined by the type of event desired.
Rituals can be grand gestures or intimate moments.

I relish collaborating with people to ensure moments of significance are marked in authentic ways. Spontaneity in the planning can enliven the process and bring genuine individuality to the ceremony.

I devise and deliver WeddingsBirth & Namings, Vow Renewals,
Birthdays and Launches. More details on my ceremony making are here.

What I offer
I provide an initial meeting to design your ceremony. This can be in person, over the phone or Skype. We discuss your aspirations: the why, where, what and how of the occasion. My skill is in helping you find exactly what it is you want, from the overarching theme to small, significant details: the glaze on the cherry on the icing on the cake.

As a writer I can write the wording, give drafts over to you for discussion and amendment, or not. I also have a huge knowledge of possible poems and other writings that may suit your needs.

A rehearsal is also included for Wedding and Civil Partnership
Ceremonies.

As facilitator of the ceremony I can be as present as you wish, as your occasion requires. I will ensure everyone knows what is going to happen and act as a guide to the event, holding the space so it’s as sure and safe as possible for everyone there.

Types of ceremonies I offer are Vow Renewals, Birthdays and Namings as well as the Weddings and Launches listed in the next menu.

Add-ons
I make limited edition art books and pamphlets and can design, or advise on the design of, any printed materials you may want to
accompany your ceremony.

I also have approximately 100m of bright material bunting in 5m strips I can supply for any occasion – as part of the service.

Script-only
If you would prefer a family member or friend to deliver your ceremony but would like help with the content, I can offer a script-only service.

What it costs
Piece-of-string territory here.
My minimum for all (bar weddings) is £50.
What it goes up to is up to you and what you want.

I do enjoy the low tech side of ceremony and value pre-loved
resources, so  happily work to smaller budgets.

I can also point you towards a great photographer, dressmaker and cake-maker based in the north west of England. And probably know other people who can help make your ceremony just as you want.

About & Contact

superwomansmall

When I was working in HMP Lancaster Castle an inmate shared his experience of being a dad inside, how much he missed his son and what he wanted to pass on to him. He said “All I’ve got to give him is my word”.

I believe, ultimately, all any of us have is our word. What we say defines us alongside what we do.

My dad used to say “Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never harm you.”

I love my dad, but I don’t agree. I think the thoughts and beliefs
contained in words do have power. As well as harm, they can heal, inspire, challenge and illuminate.

I like what Martin Heidegger said: “Language is the house of our
Being”. What he meant by ‘Being’ was, I’m told, the ground of our
existence.

How words root us is what guides me as a poet and celebrant. I am passionate about communication – clear, careful communication – that connects us, enables us to share experience, ideas and emotion.

I am glad to be working with such delicate, strong tools as words. I aim to highlight the wonder and limitlessness of words in poems, stories and song in all aspects of my work: writing, ceremony, coaching …

Based on Morecambe Bay in Lancashire, England, other elements I love in life are the sea and sky. I believe we are shaped by where we live. At the moment, I’m being whittled to a windblown thing.

On a more practical level, my CV can be viewed here.
